Should a UCL international student live in Bloomsbury, or somewhere cheaper?

Bloomsbury is the postcode (mostly WC1) where UCL, SOAS, Birkbeck, and the Institute of Education physically sit. It's also one of the most expensive student-housing markets in London. The instinct is to live there because it's the campus. The math often disagrees.

We help you decide whether Bloomsbury's premium is worth it for you, or whether King's Cross / Holborn / Stratford / Whitechapel give you 80% of the experience for 60% of the rent. 5-10 min to UCL

The campus itself. Walk to UCL in 5-10 minutes. Garden squares, British Museum, the bookshop street. Premium rent. Best for first-year students who want zero commute and accept the cost.

King's Cross / Pentonville / Caledonian Rd (N1)

10-15 min walk OR 1 stop on Northern/Piccadilly

Just north. Major redevelopment zone — Coal Drops Yard, Granary Square, the new Google HQ. Same Tube ride as Bloomsbury but cheaper rent and modern build-quality flats.

Holborn / Farringdon (EC1)

10-15 min walk

City fringe. Quieter on weekends, lively at lunch. Cheaper than Bloomsbury, walking distance, and you get period buildings with character. Good for students who like dense, urban, business-y vibes.

Stratford / Newham (E15)

25-30 min via Central / Jubilee Line

East London, Olympic Park area. Significantly cheaper. ~25-min Tube to UCL. Modern high-rises (East Village, Olympic Way). Best for budget-tight students who don't mind the commute and want newer buildings.

Whitechapel / Aldgate East (E1)

20-25 min via Central Line

Very affordable for the location. Bangladeshi food street, Spitalfields Market, easy Hammersmith & City line. Some students love the energy; others find it less polished than the WC postcodes.

What one international grad student actually spends.

One person, sharing a 2-bed. Rent share = midpoint of Zone 1-2 student studio + 2-bed listings (May 2026) for someone splitting a 2-bed. Utilities benchmarks from Ofgem 2025 student rate. The boring stuff that matters

IHS — pay £776/year before you fly. NHS access from day one.

Immigration Health Surcharge is paid online during your visa application. Most students miss the £776 line item in their visa cost summary. Once paid, NHS GP and hospital care are free in England.

Council Tax: full-time students are exempt. Get the letter.

Once enrolled, get the 'Council Tax Exemption Certificate' from your university registry. Send it to your borough council on day one. Without it, you'll get billed ~£1,800/year by mistake.

Most landlords ask for a UK guarantor. Workarounds exist.

Standard ask: a UK-resident homeowner. International students rarely have one. Three workarounds: (1) Housing Hand or UK Guarantor Service (paid third-party guarantor, ~£295), (2) 6 months' rent upfront (some landlords accept), (3) Build-to-rent properties that explicitly take international students (Vita, Chapter, Scape).

Open a UK bank account before you fly with Monzo or Revolut.

High street banks (HSBC, Lloyds) want proof of UK address. Monzo / Revolut / Starling open accounts on phone with passport + selfie. Sufficient for the first few months. Switch to a high-street student account once you have proof of address.
