Roommate rent split calculator (equal or income-weighted)

3 min read · Updated May 1, 2026

Split rent fairly with roommates — equal split or income-weighted. Avoid the post-move-in awkward conversation about who pays what.

Splitting rent equally is the obvious choice — but if one of you earns 3× the other, equal split can quietly cause resentment. This tool gives you both options side by side.

How most international students split rent

  • Equal split (default) — works when everyone is on a similar stipend or budget. Easy, no math.
  • Income-weighted— works when there's a big income gap (e.g., one is a fully funded PhD with $36K, the other is a self-funded master's with $12K from family).
  • Room-size adjusted — bigger room or master with private bath pays more. Common for 3- and 4-bed houses.

Things to agree on BEFORE you sign

  1. Who pays what — written down, not verbal.
  2. How utility bills get split (equal? based on rooms? based on usage?).
  3. Cleaning rotation.
  4. Guests / overnight policy.
  5. Quiet hours.
  6. What happens if one person breaks the lease early.
