UChicago Fall 2026 housing timeline (admit → move in)

Month-by-month checklist for UChicago grad students: when to start searching, when leases drop, when to fly in for viewings, when to sign. Tuned for the Fall 2026 admit cycle.
The UChicago Fall 2026 housing cycle is in motion. This is the month-by-month plan we give to admits in our WeChat and WhatsApp groups. Adjust dates if you're a transfer or off-cycle admit.
February–March 2026 — admit decisions land
- Most graduate program decisions are out by mid-March.
- Take 1–2 days, then start researching neighborhoods — Hyde Park, Kenwood, South Loop are the main UChicago options.
- Join WeChat / WhatsApp UChicago admit groups.
April 2026 — accept and plan
- Accept your admit and pay deposit.
- Apply for I-20.
- Decide your housing strategy: solo studio, 1-bed alone, 2-bed with roommate, or shared house.
- Set realistic budget — see our budget calculator.
May 2026 — start serious search
- Listings for Sep 1 / Oct 1 move-ins start appearing on landlord sites in May.
- Submit your interest form here so we can match you with verified partners (free).
- Start identifying buildings — we recommend 5–10 to consider.
June 2026 — viewings begin
- If you can't fly to Chicago, request video tours. All major managers offer them now.
- Get someone you trust (a current UChicago student, a family friend) to do an in-person walkthrough if possible.
- Have your no-credit workarounds documentation ready.
July 2026 — apply and sign
- Submit applications. Application fees are $50–$75 each.
- Sign your lease. Read it carefully — pay attention to: lease length, early termination fee, pet policy, utility responsibilities, renter's insurance requirement.
- Pay first month + security deposit.
August 2026 — visa stamp + arrival prep
- Visa stamping appointment at US consulate. Confirm I-20 and SEVIS fee paid.
- Book flights to land 3–7 days before classes start (gives buffer for delays).
- Start the SSN and bank account paperwork once enrolled.
Late September 2026 — orientation + classes
- UChicago orientation begins late September; classes start the first week of October.
- Pick up keys 1–2 days before move-in. Confirm utilities are in your name.
